Soccer City Stadium - Johannesburg, South Africa
|
Rebuilding and expansion of the existing 50,000 seats FNB football stadium, to a new stadium with a seating capacity of 89.000 spectators. The Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg was the main stadium for the 2010 FIFA World Soccer championships, where the opening game and the final were played.
The design of the stadium is based on the calabash or African pot, this being the most recognisable object to represent the African continent. BAM International has built the stadium together with its South African partner Grinaker-LTA.
The stadium has brought more to the City of Johannesburg than soccer alone: the builders employed large numbers of local workers, many of whom received special training. The training meant a serious skills upgrade for a large group of workers, which will also improve opportunities in future construction careers.
‘Technicolour calabash takes fifth place on the world capacity rankings for football stadiums.’
