Chesapeake Bay Bridge - Virginia, United States of America

Printer-friendly version

Construction of 32 kilometres of bridges for the south bound parallel crossing of the Chesapeake Bay. 2,372 piles with a diameter of 1,350 mm were used to support over 600 prefabricated pile caps and over 2,000 precast and prestressed double 'T' deck units.

The parallel crossing was built to increase safety by separating traffic in opposite directions. It also would allow major repair work to the old bridge upon opening to traffice of the new spans, which was port of the contract. Project construction started in September 1995 and the project was handed over and accepted by the client on the contractual completion date of 1 July 1999.
